“The concepts behind his guitar course are rock solid, practical, and imaginative...”

— Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, and solo artist)

“The Visionary Guitar course is unique in it’s presentation and methodology...”

— Hal Leonard (Music Publishing Giant)

“Nik promises a lot and initially I was sceptical as to whether he could truly deliver the kind of understanding and results he claimed... Not long into the first lesson I was convinced.”

— Geoffrey Chan (Graduate)

Music is something you need to feel, not think about.

Music is something you need to feel, not think about.

As guitarists we fall into 2 categories...
  • players who mainly learnt from TAB, YouTube, books and teachers
  • and players who learnt predominantly by ear
What’s the difference?
  • “Learnt” players may know lots of songs, scales, and theory... but often lack feel and groove in their playing… and are uncomfortable improvising.
  • “Ear” players have great feel, dynamics, and note choice... because they do what it takes to get the ‘right’ sound out of their guitar.
Why is this so?

Because the way you learn a piece of music...is the way your body will play it

Why is this so?

Because the way you learn a piece of music...is the way your body will play it

You use your left brain when learning from written or visual material… which deals with logic, numbers, formulas, sequences, lists, and analysis and is basically devoid of emotion.

You use your right brain when learning by ear… which deals with rhythm, feel, sound, colour, dimension and emotional expression.

Therefore when playing:
  • Learnt players think with their fingers, ‘calculate’ what they are playing... and hear by default… If you are a ‘learned’ player, this comment might trigger you… Take a moment to think deeply about how this applies to the way you play and approach music.
  • Ear players let the sounds guide them... and their rhythms… they often hear the notes ‘needed’ in their ‘head’ before they play them… they are just searching for the notes that complete what they hear.
But rarely is either player satisfied... Why?

Because they know something is missing in their playing... something that musical geniuses like Beethoven, Mozart, Vai, Zappa, Satriani... and many of your favourite players have (or had)... the left brain’s gift to understand music theory, and the right brain’s gift to hear and play it well.

About Nik Tongue

Nik Tongue is a professional guitarist, educator, and founder of Visionary Guitar — a neuroscience-informed system that transforms how his graduates think, feel, and perform.

With a 10-year self-taught background as a guitarist and band member, Nik became a student at GIT (Hollywood, CA) and then toured internationally with Steve Vai during his Fire Garden and G3 tours, alongside Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Kenny Wayne Shepherd.

Drawing on his passion for study and exploration into cognition, movement, and musical expression, and hugely disappointed with the results of the current teaching methods, he developed a 10-week method that, over two decades of testing on the whole gamut of guitarists you could expect to encounter, consistently produces breakthrough results for players of every style and level.

Praised by Hal Leonard as “unique in its presentation and methodology” and by Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani) as “rock solid, practical, and imaginative”, Nik’s work bridges intellect and intuition, training musicians to not just play music, but be it.

“I’ve been teaching this system in Australia since 98 and all my students have been amazed at how much they’ve improved during the 3 months... regardless of previous ability, knowledge or preferred style. I, or my students, have not been able to find any one method or book that is so concise and efficient.”
